It is also the second richest city in India after Mumbai. The foundation stone of the city was laid on 15 December 1911 by Emperor George V of India. Calcutta was the capital of the country during the British rule till 1911. The British government decided to declare Delhi as the capital. It was also the central region of India at that time, the British government felt that the country could be better governed from here. New Delhi was inaugurated on 13 February 1931 by the Governor General Lord Irwin.
