About New Delhi - National Capital

New Delhi is the capital of India and the seat of the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Government of India. It is located on the west bank of the Yamuna with a population of 1,173,902 as of 2011 India census. New Delhi is a part of Delhi Metropolitan. It is also the second richest city in India after Mumbai. The foundation stone of the city was laid on 15 December 1911 by Emperor George V of India. Calcutta was the capital of the country during the British rule till 1911. The British government decided to declare Delhi as the capital. It was also the central region of India at that time, the British government felt that the country could be better governed from here. New Delhi was inaugurated on 13 February 1931 by the Governor General Lord Irwin.

New Delhi railway station, code NDLS, is a railway station located in New Delhi in the Indian state of Delhi. It serves as the headquarters of the Northern Railway zone of the Indian Railways. Jai Singh II was a great astronomer and mathematics, had built a large observatory in Delhi in 1724, called Jantar Mantar. Jantar Mantar is one of the five observatories built by Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur. It is the largest of all the observatories built by him. It is a structure of scientific importance, as it is a large collection of instruments used for astronomical purpose.
